History

Newtown Park Tennis Club was founded in 1992 by an enthusiastic group of locals (several of whom are still club members) and has been growing and thriving ever since. The club was what you might call a joint venture, being financed half by the local founder members and the families they recruited, and half by the county council. It started off with four tarmac courts and had neither floodlights, clubhouse, nor facilities of any kind. However, thanks to the drive and persistence of the membership, Newtown Park flourished and grew in a relatively short time.

By the mid-nineties, NPTC started to play in the DLTC leagues (though not Floodlight League at first, for obvious reasons!), and in 1997 we won our first pennants: one for the women’s team (senior league) and one for the men’s (summer league). At some stage along the way someone who ‘knew someone’ managed to source a small cabin which served as our first ever clubhouse, albeit without any running water or lights. Floodlights soon followed; then in the late nineties, the hard courts were replaced by the surface we have today, and in the early years of the 21st century the club moved into a larger container/cabin which had the unimaginable luxury of electricity and mains water.

Now, in 2026, we have five well-maintained courts and, after many years in the old green cabin, we are the proud occupiers of a sunny and comfortable state-of-the-art clubhouse, one wall of which is lined with DLTC pennants. We’ve come a long way!
